Ainsworth to Hood River - 48 km - a bit tired today, broken chain and a miscalculation resulting in pushing the bike up 12% grades for multiple kilometers and I was ready for a motel room in Hood River. Today's navigation lesson - note the map scale when the road rises 100 m in 700 m of road!
St Helens to Ainsworth State Park campground - 106 km - 10 hr 45 min - Greatest day yet on the ride. First 50 km were an easy ride to REI in Portland where I spent far too much money (you know, a normal visit to a camping outfitter). Then I worked my way across town to connect with the old Hiway 30 which then climbed through trees along the river and across farmlands up to 265 m altitude. Then the downhill happened!
36 km to St Helens today. Planned to visit the local bike shop and camp in the city park. Bike shop was closed on Mondays and camping in the city park is closed until further notice. Motel and laundry, not a total loss. Tomorrow will be a long day through the city of Portland to a campground on the opposite side of the city.
4 June first day heading east. Good flat ride, not quite the same gastronomic experience as Fort Stevens, but adequate.
